Test lungs have been developed for research on infant breathing models. This set of lungs is instrumented for pressure, flow and volume. Click the video below.
Carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations are measured using laboratory-grade analyzers.
As Carbon Dioxide accumulates in the lungs it displaces oxygen. The relationship between CO2 and O2 can be calculated and is illustrated here from direct measurements in the breathing model.
Our soft lung model responds to resistance and has volume and compliance similar to an infant. Measuring instruments are used to record pressure, flow and volume. Pressure-volume data is used to calculate Work of Breathing.
The infant breathing model has been used to visualize the flow field around an infant using a technique called Schlieren photography. Click above to view a 3-minute video showing rebreathing in action.
